Ale Wives, Doom Painting, Holy Trinity Church, Coventry

In 2018, in conjunction with Oxford University and with the support of Coventry’s ‘Great Places’ scheme, Medieval Coventry produced ‘Royal Women of Influence in Coventry: Queens Isabella and Margaret of Anjou’. This display of 20 panels, was first shown at Drapers’ Hall and was brought back by popular demand at Holy Trinity Church in 2021 and at St Mary’s Hall in 2023. Many of the panels are now on permanent display at Holy Trinity Church, St Mary’s Hall and St John the Baptist Church.

In 2021, Medieval Coventry arranged for its medieval civic sword to be displayed at the Herbert Museum & Gallery in 2021. The sword, c. 1460, is part of the Burrell Collection, Glasgow and was lost for centuries until found in Whitehall London in the 19th century. Coventry’s other medieval civic sword, c. 1430, is held in the Lord Mayor’s office and is still used on ceremonial occasions today.

Medieval Coventry contributed to fresh interpretation of the Medieval Doom Painting in Holy Trinity church, following the insertion of new lighting in 2020. Panels show a detailed view of the painting with an identification of the figures and an interpretation of its meaning.

Medieval Coventry contributed to the new interpretation of St Mary’s Hall and its contents following restoration and reopening in 2022.
